NSCD staff will pre-record a short hike in their respective areas and find materials for crafts such as leafs, pine cones, and rocks. Participants are encouraged to take a walk and find thier materials before the zoom call as well. We will then use our found supplies to make a craft! 

Weekly Details:

  • May 19 - Kite Making.  Make your own kite from objects around the house.  Fly the kite that same day!  Materials needed: Large plastic bag or newspaper, straight sticks or straws at least 35 inches long, scissors, string, tape or glue, ruler or tape measure.  Optional: Markers, colored paper, ribbon.
  • May 26 - Make a Birds Nest.  Go on a hike to gather supplies. On Zoom we will watch the footage of March's hike while we talk about our experiences of gathering supplies then we will use what we found to make a bird nest. Can yours stay balanced in a tree after?!  Materials needed: A lot of sticks, leaves, grass, feathers, hay/straw, string/glue/tape.
  • June 2 - 3D Nature Pictures.  Make unique pictures out of materials found outside and in nature during a hike or around the yard.  Good objects include leaves, grass, pine cones, sticks, feathers, small rocks, and anything you can glue down on paper.  Bring the items back home and get ready to make a fun art project together!  Materials needed: Anything from nature that you can glue down on paper.
  • June 9 - Making Mandalas.  Go on a hike to gather supplies.  After explaining what a mandala is we will use what we found to make a beautiful mandala to remind us of the hike. Materials needed: A paper plate or piece of paper, art supplies from nature (grass, leaves, flowers, rocks, sticks, etc.), glue/tape.
  • June 16 - Rock Painting.  Materials needed: Rocks, various colors of paint (acrylic works best), brushes, markers, paper plate.  Optional: Stickers, nail polish, glitter. 
  • June 23 - Make your own tree art!  Go on a hike to gather supplies.  Materials needed: A piece of paper, art supplies from nature, a handful of sticks that are similar in length (make sure they fit on a piece of paper), leaves, flowers, grass, glue/tape.

Camp out at home inside or out, or in a spot where you get a signal for a zoom call. NSCD will help participants set up their camp virtually.  Bring your favorite camp games, light a fire, cook, have a hot dog roast and even Smores!

Any camping gear participants have available will work for this activity. Adaptations include a tarp and string or just laying under the stars! A list of suggested camping items will be sent to you upon signing up for the activity.

Interactive games and activities to encourage people to get up and moving! We will start with a light warm up (very basic stretching) and go into an activity like simon says or a dance party. At the end we will do more light stretching and breathing exercises to (hopefully) calm down after getting some energy out. Geared towards younger ages, physical and cognitive.

Weekly Details:

  • May 18 - Archery Workout.  Although we may not be able to shoot archery right now in this time at home we can make sure to use this time productively and use it to get our bodies trained and prepared for the sports we love and will return to when we can.  Materials needed: Approximate workout space of 8ft by 8ft to do the workout, preferably carpet. 1 yoga mat, towel, or blanket to use for stretching and exercises done on the ground. Make sure it is stable and does not slide around. 1 piece of string, shoelace, or cord approximately 3ft to 4ft long. Two 3lb - 5lb weights or two cans of soup.
  • May 25 - Dance Party with Jen Gold! Join NSCD Instructors for an hour of dancing and having fun! Materials needed: Dancing shoes and a smile.
  • June 1 - Move Like Animals! Join us for a fun filled hour to get up and get moving like your favorite animal. Materials needed: An 8ft by 8ft workout space, active clothing/shoes, a water bottle, and your imagination.
  • June 8 - Imagination Jog.  Bring your skills and your imagination as we go on an adventure and find creative ways to get through obstacles! Materials needed: Workout clothes and a water bottle.
  • June 15 - Move Like Animals! Join us for a fun filled hour to get up and get moving like your favorite animal. Materials needed: Workout clothes and a water bottle.
  • June 22 - Let's Play Charades & Simon Says! After a light warm up we will break into teams for charades then join back as one group for Simon Says! Materials needed: Workout clothes and a water bottle.

Although we may not be able to get out and do our favorite NSCD outdoor activities, we can still use this time at home to get our bodies trained and prepared for the sports we love! The virtual workout program will be a 45 minute workout guided by an NSCD instructor built to be done with no specific equipment required, and to help train for the various recreation pursuits that NSCD offers throughout the year. Each week participants will be provided with a workout outline to keep and can join NSCD to learn and train for a range of sports including:

Rock climbing, Skiing (Nordic/Alpine), Snowboarding, Rock Climbing, Paddle sports, Archery/Shooting Sports and more!

Weekly Details: 

  • May 20 - Rock Climbing Workout.  Please note that even if you do not have all the required equipment you can still do some exercises in other ways or using other items from around the house as shown by the instructor.  Materials needed: Approximate workout space of 8ft. by 8ft. to do the workout, preferably carpet, 1 yoga mat, towel, or blanket to use for stretching and exercises done on the ground (make sure it is stable and does not slide around), 3 one gallon milk jugs, two 3lb – 5lb weights or two cans of soup, 1 jump rope or piece of rope that will work as jump rope if possible, 1 broom handle approx. 3 ft. long with a hole in the middle of it, 1 rope approx. 3ft. long.
  • May 27 - Paddle Sports Workout.  Materials needed: Approximate workout space 8ft. by 8ft. to do the workout, preferably carpet, 1 yoga mat, towel, or blanket to use for stretching and exercises done on the ground (make sure it is stable and does not slide around), 3 one to two gallon milk jugs, two 3lb – 5lb weights or two cans of soup, 1 broom, 2 rolls of duct tape, 2 ankle weights.
  • June 3 - Parkour Workout.  No materials needed. 
  • June 10 - Air rifle Workout.  No materials needed. 
  • June 17 - Kayaking Workout.  No materials needed.

Go on a hosted Virtual Outdoor Recreation Experience with an NSCD Instructor. During this interactive experience, an NSCD Instructor will share a live video of a hiking, paddling, climbing, and so on in either the Front Range or mountains. During the video, the instructor hosting the Zoom Meeting will give the participants the opportunity to discuss different aspects of each Outdoor Recreation Experience and learn new skills, techniques, and fun interesting facts about the natural environment.The participants will also be able to test their skills of observation by participating in an interactive game of eye spy.

Weekly Details:

  • May 18 - Learn about packing for camping, hiking, and backpacking.  NSCD Staff will guide you through the essentials of getting out on your next adventure and give you tips on how to properly pack for a great experience! Materials needed: Participants are encouraged to showcase any items related to camping.
  • May 25 - Nature show and tell. Participants are instructed to find an object outside and do some research to find out everything they can about it.  They will then share what they find with others on the video chat.  The objects can be living or inanimate.  They just must be from nature.  They are encouraged to use internet and books, family, or friends to research about the object. Materials needed: Any object from outside and access to internet or nature reference books.
  • June 1 - Hike Around Winter Park Bingo. We will watch a hike while following along with the bingo sheet. Once you see something from the bingo sheet on the video draw your best impression to mark it off! Materials needed: A piece of paper, writing/drawing utensils, access to the NSCD Bingo sheet (this will also be on the screen).
  • June 8 - Virtual Rock Climbing. No materials needed.
  • June 15 - Trail etiquette.  Watch footage of NSCD Instructors as they guide through beautiful trails and discuss how to hike, bike, and ride safely! Materials needed: Showcase the items you use to stay safe when outdoors.  Bear repellent, high visibility clothes, PPE, flashlights, etc.
  • June 22 - MTB Biking. No materials needed.

  • May 21 - Bear Snores On and Brother Wolf.  Materials needed: A piece of paper, writing / drawing utensils - anything to add some color! (if no crayons, markers, etc. are available don't be afraid to use stuff found in nature! Grass, flowers, and leaves can add a ton of color!), scissors.
  • May 27 - Following along with yoga poses and movements associated with the books: You are a Lion by Taeeun Yoo, Adventures with Barefoot Critters by Teagan White, and Goodnight Yoga by Mariam Gates.  Materials needed: Athletic shoes and a water bottle.
  • June 2 - Dr. Seuss Day! Reading The Tree Doctor, A Tale about Tails, and If I ran the zoo. Associated activities include making our own tail, a virtual pancake making experience, and drawing the most wild animal imaginable!  Materials needed: A piece of paper, writing / drawing utensils - anything to add some color! (if no crayons or markers are available don't be afraid to use stuff found in nature! Grass, flowers, and leaves can add a ton of color!), scissors.
  • June 9 - Lindsey Craig Sing-A-Long Day! We will sing along with Dancing Feet and Farmyard Beat as we get up and move!  Materials needed: Athletic shoes and a water bottle.
  • June 16 - NSCD Sports Story Time. We will read Learning to Ski by Mr. Magee, Elmer and the Whales by David Mckee. We will color our own checkered elephants like in Elmer and the Whales and will put on our imagination caps for a virtual ski run after reading Learning to Ski.  Materials needed: A piece of paper, writing / drawing utensils - anything to add some color! (if no crayons or markers are available don't be afraid to use stuff found in nature! Grass, flowers, and leaves can add a ton of color!), scissors. 
  • June 23 - Doreen Cronin Day! We will read Stretch, Bounce, and Wiggle as we stretch, bounce and wiggle our bodies!  Materials needed: Athletic shoes and a water bottle.

Therapeutic riding involves teaching riding skills to riders with disabilities, with adaptations as needed. The primary goal of therapeutic riding is to learn riding and horsemanship skills. However, as the movement of the horse is inherently therapeutic, riders frequently enjoy secondary benefits such as increased postural control, balance, strength and speech.

During the Indoor Rock Climbing Program with the NSCD, athletes will learn the basic skills of indoor rock climbing from a certified American Mountain Guide Association Single Pitch Instructor. Those skills will include but are not limited to: tying figure eight follow through knot, belaying using an ATC device, rappelling using an ATC device, climbing technique/movement and climbing history/ethics. This is an all-inclusive program for all ages, abilities and skill levels. We will provide the adaptations and assistance necessary to help all athletes overcome their own personal challenges. We know that through rock climbing you can meet and overcome obstacles you never thought possible!

In our Outdoor Paddling Club you will get the chance to explore a number of different whitewater parks in the Denver metro area. Practice your paddling skills or pass on your expertise in a fun and safe whitewater environment. Come prepared to challenge yourself and push your boundaries on the river. When paddling with the NSCD, you will be provided a boat, life jacket, spray skirt (if necessary), helmet and paddle to use for the day. If the weather warrants it, we will also provide a wetsuit and other protective equipment.  We suggest that you try to avoid wearing jeans or sweats (anything cotton) and instead dress in layers of fleece, wool, Capilene or synthetic clothing.  Weather conditions can change quickly on the water and it is better to have too many layers than to be wet and/or cold!

During our Outdoor Climbing Club sessions, you will climb high above the valley floor of Colorado’s iconic Clear Creek Canyon. In this outdoor climbing experience, you will learn the basics of outdoor climbing from tying your own figure-eight follow-through knot, belaying/rappelling, climbing technique, equipment selection/maintenance and much more. Throughout the session, you will receive high-quality climbing instruction from an American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) Single Pitch Certified Instructor and learn the skills and techniques necessary to stay safe and progress in the world of rock climbing. You will receive specialized one-on-one instruction of the highest caliber and explore new and beautiful climbing areas in the Front Range. We hope to see you out there on belay, and we can’t wait to climb on!

Experience the magic of camping. Camp under a star-filled sky, roast marshmallows over a campfire and enjoy our accessible campground at the foot of majestic James Peak. Camping is free, but a reservation is required with the NSCD for the Jim Creek Campground. Permit area is located in the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest. Camping is independent and not staffed. Space is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. Rental equipment is available.

During the Archery Clinic, athletes will be introduced to and taught the finer points of the sport of target archery. The NSCD will provide re-curve and compound bows that will be appropriate for athletes of all ages, levels and abilities. If you have your own archery gear please feel free to bring that for personal use. You will receive instruction from a USA Archery Level II instructor who is well-versed in the new and traditional forms of archery and how to achieve success in each style. Whether you are a new archer or an old pro looking for some feedback and a range to practice on, this program is a great fit for you.
